Production of the Tata Nano
CNBC-TV18 learns production of the Nano at Pant Nagar has been halted from the start of April and is expected to resume on the 12th of April. Sources say, there are issues with certain critical components, something Tata Motors has categorically denied. Swati Khandelwal gets you this exclusive report.The bookings for the Nano will kick start in the next 24 hours but Tata motors is still significantly behind their production schedule. CNBC-TV18 learns from multiple sources, that Tata Motors attempts to ramp up Nano production to 50 cars a day this month have come undone and it is in all probability producing under 20 cars a day. So sources say in all Tata motors has managed to produce about a 1000 cars till date while over 50,000 booking forms have been sold so far.
CNBC-TV18 learns, the company has halted production at Pant Nagar at the start of april and hopes to resume post the 12th of this month. A shut down post launch, is surprising given the unprecedented demand for the nano.When asked specifically about the production halt, Tata Motors Say " production and manufacturing details are internal to the company "
We also learn Tata group Chairman Ratan Tata and tata motors MD Ravi Kant are expected to visit Pant Nagar in the second half of April. When contacted Tata motors said, "Production and sales data of the Tata Nano will be made public by the company for the month of July when deliveries of the car will commence." We learn, the company is facing problems related to certain critical components. Sources say Tata Motors has apparently been struggling with this problem even before the car was launched on the 23rd of march. When contacted Tata Motors denied any problems. "We categorically state that there are no issues with the crankshaft, crankcase, air intake system etc of the Tata Nano"
We also understand that some suppliers have been asked to stock up for the moment. So this begs the question- with the production schedule going awry just how long will customers have to wait to get behind the wheels of the Nano?
New Tata Nano Car
So Jaguar's in safe hands, then. This is the Tata Nano, the new super-affordable car from the company widely expected to buy Jaguar and Land Rover in the next few weeks.
Dubbed the 'lakh' car - from the colloquial Indian word for 1,000,000 rupees, which equates to about £1,250 - the Nano delivers on Ratan Tata's pledge to build an ultra-cheap car for the Indian market.

The world's cheapest, in fact - the Nano is being marketed as an alternative to the scooters and tuk-tuks that most Indians use to get around. Shorter than a Mitsubishi i but using a similar monoboxed, rear-engined layout, it's no exaggeration to say that the Nano could transform subcontinental motoring. Be afraid.
So what do you get for the price of a sofa? Not a lot, in honesty. The Nano is powered by a two-cylinder engine, which develops a mighty 32bhp. Driving the rear wheels, it'll see the Nano to 44mph in 14 seconds (why 44mph, we're not sure) and on to a top speed of around 66mph. It'll manage around 57mph, too.
Luxuries? Not many, as you might have guessed. Twelve-inch wheels come as standard along with, erm, a steering wheel, four seats and perhaps even some suspension. A radio is an optional extra.
Concerns have been voiced about the Nano's environmental impact and safety standards, but Tata claims that it has been 'built to meet safety requirements and emissions norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions'.
Mild obfuscation, perhaps, but Tata also says that the Nano's safety performance 'exceeds regulatory requirements'. Exactly what those requirements are remain unclear, but at least the Nano should be safer than a scooter. Or, say, hopping.
Tata is yet to announce whether the Nano will go on sale outside of India, but we reckon it could be just the entry-level Jaguar to attract young penniless reprobates to the brand. Perhaps not.

Youngsters in Dehradun went into frenzy after having a glimpse of the world’s cheapest car — Nano – displayed here for the first time.
The car manufactured at the Pantnagar plant in the state was unveiled by the state’s chief secretary Indu Kumar Pandey at the company’s showroom in Majra.
“More than four hundred booking forms have been issued so far in the city. Most of these have been brought by youths,” Tata Motors Sales Manager Rajendra Gosai told reporters here.
The booking forms can be submitted from April nine to 25, he said.

Tata Motors has received an overwhelming response to its Rs one-lakh wonder, Nano, selling over 51,000 booking forms in the last three days.
According to sources close to the company, it sold 51,000 booking forms from its 218 dealerships since it started selling on April 4.
When contacted, a Tata Motors spokesperson said, “The response is progressing increasingly everyday.” He, however, declined to give any more specific details.
The sources, however, said the forms were sold only at Tata Motors dealerships and not at other outlets such as that of Croma, Westside and Titan World.
The company had launched Nano on March 23 and booking will start from April 9 till April 25.
In the National Capital, it will have a price range of Rs 1.23 lakh to Rs 1.72 lakh (ex-showroom) for the three variants.
Only one lakh customers will be chosen through a lot for the first year.
Tata Motors is currently producing Nano at its Uttarakhand plant, which has got an annual capacity of 50,000 units.
